VPN - Connect Using Department Profile

This article shares information about connecting to a department-specific VPN (as opposed to the main UA VPN).

With departmental VPNs, the legacy Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) using Duo experience is retained.  For example, this will require you to designate a 2FA method during login. The panels below describe this process in more detail.

If you are using the main UA VPN, see the VPN - Connection Methods knowledge article.

Overview - Department VPNs

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, provides a secure way for your off-campus device to connect to the UA's network. It is an especially valuable tool when you are on an unsecured wireless network (e.g., coffee shops, and airports). As with the main UA VPN, department VPNs require you to log in with 2FA. To set up 2FA, see the main 2FA article.

While much of the process is the same as using the main UA VPN, you should review the following list of differences for content specific to department VPNs:

How do I connect to a department VPN?

Keeping in mind the previously mentioned required syntax for department VPNs (vpn.arizona.edu/department), the process for connecting uses the legacy Web Auth experience where you must input the 2FA method.

Instructions

  1. Open the Cisco Secure Client.
  2. In the field next to the connect button, enter your department-specific VPN (vpn.arizona.edu/department).

Note: Refer to this list to find your department's vpn.

  3. Click Connect.
  4. Once you have clicked the Connect button, a login window will open up:
    1. Username: NetID
    2. Password: NetID Password
    3. 2FA Method: Type your preferred option.
      • Enter push to receive a Duo Mobile push notification.
      • Enter a passcode generated via the Duo Mobile app, SMS, Yubikey, Feitian, or Bypass code.
      • Type sms into the code field and submit. (This will technically count as a "failed" login attempt, but it triggers the system to text you a new batch of codes).
        1. Check your phone for the text message.
        2. Log in again using one of your new codes.

Note: To use a secondary 2FA device, add the number 2 to the end of your chosen method (e.g., push2 or sms2).

  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Accept on the Cisco Secure Client.

  7. You should now be connected to the VPN.
