VPN - Elevating Permissions on Linux


This article provides instructions for elevating permissions on Linux, which is required to connect to UA VPN.

Downloading VPN
  1. Open an internet browser and go to https://vpn.arizona.edu to install VPN.

  2. The group should be left on its default setting of 1-UASSLClient. 
  3. Type in your UA NetID, NetID Password, and the NetID+ Method.
  4. Then click Login.

  5. The following information banner displays: Click Continue.

  6. On the Cisco Secure Client Download webpage, click Download for Linux.

  7. Most browsers save files to a Downloads folder by default. Locate the download file cisco-secure-client-linux64-#.#.#####-core-vpn-webdeploy-k9.sh. 


Installing
  1. Once the download is complete, open up a terminal session.
  2. Click on Dash Home and then search for the Terminal application.

  3. A purple box should appear. Issue the command: sudo bash cisco-secure-client-linux64-#.#.#####-core-vpn-webdeploy-k9.shI

  4. You have successfully installed the Cisco Secure Client to /opt/cisco/secureclient and it is now ready for use.

  5. To launch using Terminal, issue the following command: gtk-launch com.cisco.secureclient.gui
Elevating Permissions
  1. In the Downloads folder elevate your permissions.
    Note: You will need the administrator password for the computer to proceed.
  2. To escalate privileges type in the command: sudo su, then press Enter. You will be prompted to enter a password.
  3. After the password is entered, press Enter.
  4. If this step was a success you see a root name to the left of the terminal line.  
    Note: Running as root can be dangerous. Anything you do will be permanent. Continue to follow this guide exactly. Any deviations could cause a system failure. 
  5. After you have successfully elevated privileges, you will need to allow the vpnsetup.sh shell script to have execute permissions.
  6. Type the following command: chmod +x vpnsetup.sh



  7. Next, type the following command: ./vpnsetup.sh



  8. If the setup completes successfully, you are notified with Done.
