How fast is the wireless network compared to wired on campus?

• In almost all cases, the connection speed of the wireless network will exceed that of the wired network. However, wireless speeds in dorms are variable based on the location of student devices in relation to wireless access points, client/device network interface card capabilities, as well as the physical switch and cable infrastructure servicing the building. If observed wireless speeds seem slow/unusable, students should initiate a ticket with the Network Operations team to investigate. (Contact the 24/7 Support Center to open a ticket.) 

Are gigabit ethernet connections available in dorms? 

• In most instances, the jacks in dorm rooms will only support 10Mb or 100Mb speeds. Students should switch to Wi-Fi for faster, more reliable network connectivity. Many dorm rooms do not have access to the structured cabling that can support wired gigabit Ethernet service.

Are there future plans to install gigabit ethernet connections in dorms?

• Residents in dorms should use the wireless network in lieu of physical jacks as the wired infrastructure is not being refreshed in living spaces.
  

Why are the lights on my wireless access point off?

• All Access Points (APs) in Residential Halls have their LEDs disabled to prevent light from disturbing sleep. The device is likely still working even if the lights are not on.
  
  

How do I connect to wireless in the Honors Village? 

•  Unlike other university locations, the WiFi service in the Honors Village is managed by a third-party company called Pavlov Media.  See this article for more information.
  
  

Are all dorms currently using the same wireless network technology? 

• While most dorms on campus have been updated to meet the new wireless standards, updates are still in-process for Apache-Santa Cruz, Likins, and La Aldea.
